BIOCHAR:

A New Perspective On an Old  Input to Farming and Land Management

Biochar has been utilised in agricultural systems for many thousands of years in all continents. Aborigines managed a large part of Australia's eco-system through the lighting of cool fires which produced significant quantities of biochar (charcoal) and ash.

Over the past 20 years a concerted research effort has been underway to understand why biochar is so effective in improving soil quality and crop yields.  In this seminar I will attempt to summarise the conclusions from all of this research and to outline what future research is necessary to ensure that biochar is accepted as an input to different agricultural systems.
