A Two Day Workshop in Class, Lab and Field
29 - 30 October 2007 University of Western Australia
What is the workshop about?
We aim to provide a basic understanding of soil properties through a combination of lectures, laboratory work and field examination of soil profiles. The workshop will provide an introduction to pedogenesis and soil description with an emphasis on WA soils.
By the end of day one, attendees will have the skills and confidence to determine the basic physical and chemical properties of soils as well as having an understanding of the basics of soil classification. This will enable us to spend the second day in the field investigating, describing and classifying several contrasting soil profiles.
Attendees will learn to describe and classify soil profiles to the requirements of The Australian Soil Classification (Isbell 2002), following the procedure prescribed in the Australian Soil and Land Survey Handbooks. We will focus on the capability of soils to support plant growth and the formal description/classification of soils for advisory and regulatory purposes. However every soil issue that concerns you can be discussed!
Who should attend the workshop?
This workshop will be of particular interest to agricultural advisers, engineering and environmental consultants, environmental & rehabilitation officers, regulators and others interested in describing and classifying soils for management, research and regulatory purposes.
