Landscape Function Analysis
|
A One-Day Practical Course with David Tongway
Thursday, 29 November 2007 The University of Western Australia
Landscape Function Analysis (LFA) is a field-based monitoring procedure, using simple visual indicators, to assess how well a landscape is working as a biogeochemical system. It is based on recent research findings and can be applied to a very wide variety of landscape types and a variety of land uses. It is compatible with other monitoring procedures that focus on structure and composition, as opposed to function.
The Course comprises the following modules:
- An explanation of the development of LFA as a concept
- Field instruction in the methodology of LFA, with active participation
- Instruction in vegetation assessment in an extended functional context
- Instruction in fauna habitat assessment in a ecosystem function context
- Data reduction and tabulation software use
- Instruction in the use of an interpretive framework
Potential uses:
- Estimate the functional status, trend and condition of grazed lands
- Identify the proximity of the functional status to critical thresholds
- Propose appropriate rehabilitation approaches in rangelands
- Assess the progress of minesite rehabilitation, including setting target values
Materials provided:
- Field notes and Field data collection sheets
- An interactive Manual on CD, describing the methodology with text, diagrams and photo standards
- Excel templates for data entry and tabulation
Registration Fee (incl. GST):
Full Registration: $ 770
Students: $ 330
This cost includes all course materials, field transport, morning and afternoon tea and lunch.
This introductory course will comprise of a presentation of LFA as a concept, followed by field instruction in the methodology of LFA with active involvement of the course participants, and finally a session on data reduction and tabulation software use and instruction in the use of an interpretative framework.
The instruction is provided by the originator of the approach, David Tongway (Australian National University) and an after-course email service is provided.
